Kitchen Wrapping vs Kitchen Spraying — Which Is Better?

Both kitchen wrapping and kitchen spraying are affordable alternatives to full replacement. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose — or understand why we specialise in wrapping.

Updated July 2026

What is kitchen spraying?

Kitchen spraying (also called kitchen cabinet spraying or spray painting) uses a spray gun to apply a specialist paint coat directly to your kitchen doors. Doors are either sprayed in situ or removed and sprayed in a booth. The result is a smooth, painted finish — similar to a factory-applied paint coat.

What is kitchen wrapping?

Kitchen wrapping applies a self-adhesive architectural vinyl film over the existing surface. The film comes in hundreds of finishes — solid colours, woodgrains, marble effects, concrete textures and more. Doors are typically removed, wrapped in a controlled environment and reinstalled. Frames and carcass faces are wrapped in situ.

Durability: wrapping wins on water and steam

Kitchen environments are tough: steam, grease, temperature changes and cleaning. Premium architectural vinyl (3M, CoverStyl and similar) is inherently water and steam resistant — the film itself doesn't absorb moisture. Spray paint, even specialist kitchen paint, is only as durable as its top coat — chips can expose the base layer to moisture, causing localised failure that spreads.

Vinyl also handles everyday impacts better. A chip in paint is harder to repair cleanly. A small vinyl repair is almost invisible when done correctly — a localised section can be replaced without redoing the whole door.

Finish range: wrapping wins on texture

Spray painting is limited to solid colours and can achieve some effects (metallics, sheen levels) but can't replicate woodgrain, marble or stone texture to the same standard as vinyl. If you want a realistic woodgrain or a genuine marble-effect kitchen, vinyl wrapping is the better choice — the film has a physical texture that spray paint can't replicate.

Solid colour kitchens (grey, white, navy, sage) look excellent in both methods. The choice often comes down to the specific finish and the condition of the door surface.

Process: wrapping is faster, no drying time

Spray painting requires drying time — typically 24–48 hours before reinstallation and full cure before the kitchen is back in use. Multiple coats are often needed, extending the timeline. There's also the risk of overspray if doors aren't removed (or carefully masked).

Vinyl wrapping has no drying time. Doors can be reinstalled immediately after wrapping. The kitchen is typically functional again the same day or the next morning.

Cost: broadly similar for solid colours

For a standard solid-colour finish, kitchen spraying and kitchen wrapping are broadly comparable in price. Both typically fall in the £600–£2,000 range for a full kitchen depending on size. The main cost differences are:

  • Textured finishes (woodgrain, marble) are more cost-effective in vinyl — the film does the work spray paint can't match.
  • Very large kitchens may see slightly different pricing between the two methods.
  • Worktops: wrapping covers worktops; spray painting is rarely used on worktops.

Which is right for you?

Choose kitchen wrapping if: you want a textured finish (woodgrain, marble, stone), you want worktops included, you want zero drying time, or you want the ability to replace individual sections down the line.

Kitchen spraying may suit you better if: you specifically want a very high-gloss painted look (similar to factory lacquer), your doors are unusual shapes that don't lend themselves to film application, or a spray painter you trust has assessed and recommended spraying based on your specific door type.

We specialise in wrapping — so our answer is always going to be wrapping. But we're also honest: if we see a door at survey that we think won't wrap cleanly (e.g. very rounded profiles or certain textured door types), we'll tell you rather than force a job that won't hold. See our kitchen wrapping page for our full service offering.

Why we don't spray

We made a deliberate choice to specialise in vinyl wrapping rather than offering both services. Specialisation means better results — we've developed our prep process, our film knowledge and our installation technique specifically around vinyl. We use branded films (3M, CoverStyl and others), we know their behaviour on different substrates, and we back the result with a 5-year written guarantee. A jack of both trades is rarely master of either.
